Ramayana and our Daily Lives

Now a days, the world is experiencing a period where relations are based on materialism, individualism, and selfishness. This change has begun to break down even the most pious institutions of society especially family and parenting. With likely effect of commercialization and other so-called development agendas, people are spending more of their time and energy in pursuing their economic freedom. In this rat race of achieving high profits in a short span of time, we are at the verse of sacrificing all our principals and ethics. Unfortunately, we have lost the sight of what truly matters to us – the bonding between families and society, that used to define us.

Mounting pressure of success has taken a precedence over family values and personal actualization. Nuclear families (We two and Our Two) is the mantra of today’s generation. Anyone living in a joint family or a dwelling of two brother under one roof is considered an orthodox mindset. Familial discussion about a subject matter is regarded as breach of privacy. In search for individual space, our very basic values like regard for elders are forgotten. These deeply stressed individuals have begun to lose themselves.

To resolve this ever-growing intolerance and lack of social ethics, we need a solution that can turn our life by 360 degree, that can help us to understand our roots. While searching for an easy template solution, Ramayana is best texts available to manhood. Ramayana is the only Grantha that can uphold the foundation of a family structure. This is the only text in the history where you can learn something good from even the evil characters. This is just not a story, but the age-old wisdom of this great epic has endured the test of time and can provide solution for every instance of our life even in today’s world.

Here, I would like to mention a small instance:

Once while waiting at railway station for a train, I saw an old man reading “Ramcharitmanas”. Nearby, a young couple was also waiting for the train. The husband was passing on some stupid remarks towards the old man about the usage of reading Ramayana and blah blah blah. However, the old man was quite calm and composed and kept reading his book without paying much attention. Soon the train arrived, and people start boarding the train. After a few minutes halt, train left the station. Suddenly we heard the same young man (Husband) yelling to stop the train as his wife was left behind. Someone pulled the chain and finally his wife also boarded the train. Now the old man said that this might not have happened if you would have read the Ramayana.
Why? Because, if you would have read the Ramayana, you might have learned from “The Kewat Prasanga”. When Rama asked Kewat (Boatman) to help them cross the River Ganga, then Rama first asked his wife Sita to board the boat -the gentleman conduct  – “Ladies First” – Right there in our Ramayana

In true sense, Ramayana presents the profound teachings that can be applied to our day to day lives without any complicated wordings or any abstract ideas. These solutions are applicable to every situation, including individual life, family life, and larger dimensions of social and professional ambiguities. Whenever I am in a dilemma, I just open a random page from “The Ramcharitmanas” and start reading it. Believe me, every time, I get a solution for my problem from that page.

In nutshell, Ramayana is the ultimate solution to fine tune our life especially in present environment. The whole family can enjoy the Ramayana together, and learn from this great epic of all time about their own role much clearer. Ramayana can help us to restore those multi-generational family values with an increased bonding among the society in general and the families in particular.
